NewAthena Science Webinar, by Nathalie Degenaar
On March 31, 2026, at 3:00 PM CEST, Nathalie Degenaar (University of Amsterdam) will present “Cosmic Engines Unleashed: Winds and Jets from Accretionary Compact Objects.”
Abstract: Accretion onto compact objects powers some of the most energetic outflows in the Universe, producing fast, collimated jets and dense, slower-moving disc winds. These outflows can strongly influence the accretion process itself, the evolution of X-ray binaries, and their interaction with the surrounding interstellar medium. Despite their importance, the physical mechanisms that launch and regulate winds and jets remain poorly understood. In this talk, I will review the observed connections between accretion flow properties and outflow behaviour, and highlight recent, and in some cases surprising, discoveries of disc winds and jets. I will discuss how current observations are reshaping our picture of the accretion–ejection connection, and how Athena will play a key role in advancing this field.
