NewAthena X-ray Advances: NASST and ACO Science Webinars

Beginning in 2022, the ASST and ACO launched the Athena X-ray Advances: ASST & ACO Science Webinars”, which were reformulated in November 2023 as NewAthena X-ray Advances: NASST & ACO Science Webinars.” These science seminars focus on the scientific case for NewAthena and aim to keep the NewAthena community informed about exciting developments relevant to Athena’s capabilities. The series is primarily intended for members of the NewAthena community but is open to the wider astronomy community.

Each webinar in the series is broadcast via Zoom Webinars. To facilitate live participation from a broad international audience, seminars are typically held from 15:00 to 16:00 CEST/CET. Recordings of the webinars are archived on the ACO YouTube channel.

Coming webinar

On 28 April at 15 CEST, Arne Rau (MPE) will present "The eROSITA Population of Tidal Disruption Events."

Abstract: Tidal Disruption Events (TDE) are the observable signatures of a star being disrupted by intermediate or supermassive black holes. In my talk, I will present the results of the systematic search for TDEs in the German half of the eROSITA all-sky survey. Thanks to its unprecedented combination of sensitivity and all-sky coverage, eROSITA has enabled the first comprehensive study of the X-ray-selected TDE population. This work reveals remarkable diversity in their observational properties, particularly in their temporal evolution and their multi-wavelength behaviour. I will highlight the sample properties and implications for the luminosity function and rates (Grotova+2025). Furthermore, I will summarise key discoveries from selected sources, including recent findings of extreme variability on short and long time scales (e.g., Baldini+2025, Malyali+2026).
