Catching the wind: detection of an ultrafast outflow launch with XRISM
Abstract:
Supermassive blackholes shape their host galaxies through powerful outflows, but how the ultrafast outflow (UFOs) are launched remains one of the great open questions in astrophysics. In this talk, I will present new results from the XRISM-led observation campaign of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 3783. We detected a transient, highly ionized outflow traveling at 0.19c that appeared immediately following a soft X-ray flare. Furthermore, we also observed the "Neupert effect" during the flare, linking the temporary enhancement of soft X-rays to rapid heating by non-thermal particles observed in hard X-rays. This is a classic signature of magnetic reconnection in solar flares. The combination of the outflow kinematics and this solar flare-like signature provides compelling evidence for magnetic eruption originating in the innermost region of the AGN.
